Artistic director
Katrín Hall is the Artistic Director of Iceland Dance Company. She was born in 1964 in
Reykjavík. She started her dance education with Edda Scheving ballet school and was
granted admission to the National Theatre Ballet School at the age of nine. She has
also taken courses in Cologne, Dresden and New York. She took part in the Iceland Dance
Company's productions from the year 1977 and was a full member of the company from 1982 to
1988 when she moved to Cologne, Germany. She was a solo dancer with Tanzforum in Cologne from
1988 to 1996. In 1996 she moved back to Iceland to take over the artistic direction of the
Iceland Dance Company.
Under Katrín's direction, the Iceland Dance Company has focused exclusively on
contemporary dance. During this time, the company has performed works of many of Europe's
leading choreographers. In addition she has promoted Icelandic choreographers.
Katrin has created a strong image for Id as a first class contmporary dance company.
Her emphasis has been to both promote Icelandic choreographers, and to work with
leading international choreographers. These include Jirí Kylián, Jorma Uotinen, Rui Horta, Jo
Stromgren, Stijn Celis, Rami Be'er and others.
Katrín has choreographed NPK, Between Worlds and Stingray for ID. In 2000 Katrin created Brunnar as a request of Reykjavik Energy. In 2004 she created a piece for Reykjavik Arts festival. In 2003 Katrín made a dance shortfilm called Burst with the filmmaker Reynir Lyngdal as a part of Moving North, a nordic project.
