History
Settlement by Nordic and Irish people in the 9th and 10th century.
First settler is believed to be Ingólfur Arnarsson from Norway.
In 930, the Icelandic settlers founded one of the world´s first republican governments.
In 1262, Iceland lost its independence to Norway and later to Denmark.
In 1918 Iceland gained independence.
In 1944 the present republic was founded.
